There’s something so magical about fall in New England. The way the light filters through golden maples, the crisp air that makes you want to snuggle closer to your favorite human, and the breathtaking landscapes that paint a beautiful backdrop for your wedding day. If you’re dreaming of an elopement filled with color and breathtaking nature landscapes, keep reading to learn all about my top picks for places to elope in New England during the autumn season!
I’ve had the incredible joy of photographing elopements across New England during peak foliage season, and let me tell you – there’s nothing quite like watching couples exchange vows surrounded by a colorful array of autumn foliage. Whether you’re envisioning an intimate moment on a mountain peak or a cozy ceremony by a historic mansion, New England is filled with autumn landscapes that create the most romantic backdrop for your love story.
The New England fall foliage is obviously iconic, but beyond those breathtaking views, fall brings an incredible energy that just feels right for intimate celebrations. Here are a few reasons why I’m obsessed with fall elopements in New England:

You might be surprised to find a coastline listed as one of the best places to experience fall foliage in New England, but it’s true. If you’re looking for a blend of elegance and natural beauty, Connecticut’s coastline offers some hidden gems that will take your breath away. I’ve photographed several weddings and elopements at places like Eolia Mansion that blends Coastline and historic gardens, as well as Hillstead Museum that sits inside the CT River Valley. These stunning state mansions are surrounded by nature that comes alive with color during the autumn season.

What makes Connecticut special:
What I love about the Connecticut coastline locations is how they pull you slightly away from the fully-immersed-in-nature experience while still giving you all those gorgeous fall feelings. Picture saying your vows with historic architecture as your backdrop, surrounded by red and golden trees in a romantic, timeless setting. Sounds pretty magical, right?
Best timing for Connecticut: Early to mid-October

Moving north into Massachusetts, the Berkshires have stolen my heart time and time again. There’s something so special about this region – from the abundance of beautiful Airbnbs and picturesque New England towns, to the rolling mountains that create the most stunning ceremony backdrops.

Why I love the Berkshires:
The Berkshire range offers endless possibilities for your elopement adventure. Whether you’re drawn to a mountaintop vow exchange or a more intimate ceremony tucked away in a forest clearing, this area delivers a truly quintessential New England fall elopement experience.
Best timing for the Berkshires: Late September through the first week or two of October

The White Mountains are absolutely iconic for fall elopements! This region is home to some of the highest peaks and awe-inspiring views in all of New England. If you’re dreaming of an adventure elopement that feels epic and breathtaking, the White Mountains truly deliver in the most incredible way.

What makes the White Mountains special:

I love how versatile this area is! For example, you can hike to a secluded peak for your ceremony, find a beautiful meadow surrounded by colorful trees, or even incorporate activities like a scenic gondola ride into your day.
Best timing for the White Mountains: Late September into the first week of October

There’s something so special about combining Maine’s rugged coastline with fall foliage – it’s a combination that never fails to create magic. Acadia National Park offers a unique blend of ocean views, mountain trails, and colorful forests that you simply can’t find anywhere else in New England (talk about the best of everything!).
What makes Acadia unique:
Best timing for Acadia: Early to mid-October
While technically not New England, the Adirondacks are absolutely worth considering for your fall elopement! These mountains offer some of the most spectacular, awe-inspiring views on the East Coast, not to mention it’s located within driving distance of New York City making it an easy-to-reach destination for you and your guests.
Why choose the Adirondacks:
Best timing for Adirondacks: Mid-September through early October

No matter where elope during fall in New England, one important thing to keep in mind is that Mother Nature doesn’t follow our calendar exactly! While there are general guidelines for when you can expect to experience peak foliage, staying flexible is key. Weather patterns, temperature changes, and rainfall all affect when and how the leaves change each year.
My recommendation for elopements is to choose your date based on your overall vision and what feels right for your story, then embrace whatever nature gives you. Some of my favorite elopements have happened during “off-peak” times when the colors were more subtle. No matter what, though, remember that there’s beauty in every stage of the season.
| Adirondacks, NY | Mid-September to early October | Changes earliest due to elevation |
| White Mountains, NH | Late September to first week October | Peak mountain foliage |
| Berkshires, MA | Late September to mid-October | Perfect mountain timing |
| Connecticut Coast | Early to mid-October | Coastal areas change later than inland areas |
| Acadia, Maine | Early to mid-October | Latest peak due to ocean influence |
