How to Elope in New York

What to Know About Planning Your Outdoor Elopement in New York

When most people think of New York, their minds immediately go to the bustling streets of Manhattan and the iconic skyline. But that’s not all this incredible state has to offer! In fact, one of the things I love about elopements in New York (especially when it comes to eloping in nature) is that the diversity here is endless! Picture this instead: you and your love exchanging vows on a mountaintop in the Adirondacks with views that stretch for miles, saying “I do” beside a pristine lake in the Finger Lakes region, or celebrating with your humans in a cozy Hudson Valley meadow surrounded by rolling hills. All of these are possibilities when you choose to elope in New York. Whether you’re NYC locals looking for a peaceful retreat from city life or adventurous souls who are drawn to New York’s incredible outdoor settings, I’ve created this step by step guide on how to elope in New York to help you plan an unforgettable celebration.

Why New York is an Ideal Elopement Location

Incredible Diversity of Landscapes

I know I already mentioned this, but it’s true – New York offers such an amazing variety of settings and landscapes. From the dramatic peaks of the Adirondacks to the gentle rolling hills of the Hudson Valley, the rugged beauty of the Catskills and the serene waters of the Finger Lakes – you truly can’t go wrong with the options here.

And what I really love about New York elopements is how accessible these locations are. You can drive straight from New York City to any of these stunning locations in just a few hours. It’s like having multiple states’ worth of landscape diversity all within a few hours of each other.

Perfect Escape from City Life

For my NYC-based couples, New York elopements offer a peaceful escape from the exciting chaos of city living. There’s something so special about trading subway sounds, skyscrapers, and crowded streets for birdsongs, mountain views, and peaceful forest paths. Eloping in New York is more than just a vacation – it’s a beautiful pause that lets you slow down and focus completely on each other.

Hidden Gem Locations

Most of my couples who elope want a secluded or more personal wedding experience and thankfully, New York has countless spots that feel completely off the beaten path. The Adirondacks especially offer some of the most insane views I’ve ever seen, and the best part is that many of these stunning viewpoints are accessible via easy hikes that people of any activity level can enjoy.

Your Step-by-Step Guide on How to Elope in New York

Step 1: Choose Your Ideal Location

Every elopement needs a ceremony location. Whether you choose a quiet forest clearing or a mountaintop vista, New York has an incredible variety to choose from. Here are a few of my top picks:

Hudson Valley:

With rolling hills and charming small towns, Hudson Valley is a beautiful choice for couples who love quiet, natural landscapes. The area has a great mix of outdoor settings, cozy accommodations, and a vibrant arts and culinary scene, making it an ideal destination for intimate celebrations (with or without guests).

Catskills:

If you are craving a more rugged, wild nature vibe, the Catskills may be calling to you. This area of New York state is filled with dramatic mountain landscapes, wooded forest trails, and the most beautiful variety of waterfalls and creeks I’ve seen. The region of New York is perfect for adventurous couples who aren’t afraid to add a bit more excitement to their day – think stunning backdrops mixed with hiking adventures, intimate forest ceremonies, or even waterfall elopements.

Adirondacks & Upstate Gems:

The Adirondacks is a much larger area than the other two locations I’ve listed, and the views here are absolutely breathtaking! With wide open mountain vistas overlooking pristine lakes, this location will truly give you that “on top of the world” feeling. And, one of the things I love about the Adirondacks is that there are hiking trails for all activity levels. No matter what kind of adventure you want to have, the Adirondacks delivers.

Step 2: Decide When You Want to Elope in New York

Once you’ve decided where you want to elope in New York, it’s time to choose when to say ‘I Do’. If I’m honest, I love every season in New York, but there are some important things to know about each one depending on the type of experience you are envisioning.

Spring (April-June)

Late spring is absolutely magical in New York! The weather in most regions is perfect for outdoor activities, and many of the wildflowers are just starting to bloom, which makes everything feel fresh and full of possibility.

What to expect:

  • Mild temperatures perfect for hiking
  • Beautiful blooming landscapes
  • Fewer crowds than summer months
  • Lower (for New York) humidity
  • Occasional spring showers

Summer (June-August)

Summer offers some of the most predictable weather for outdoor elopements in New York, and it’s easily one of my favorite times to go exploring. This is an ideal time of year for couples who want to have the best chance of good weather for their elopement in nature.

Perfect for:

  • Long days with extended golden hour light
  • Comfortable temperatures for guests of all ages
  • Swimming or water activities if your location includes lakes
  • Outdoor dining and extended celebrations

Fall (September-November)

New England is known for its fall foliage, and while not technically in New England, New York still delivers! Many of the locations I’ve shared will give you a colorful backdrop in addition to the already beautiful views.

Timing tips:

  • Peak foliage varies by location and elevation
  • Adirondacks change earlier (mid-September to early October)
  • Hudson Valley and Catskills peak mid to late October

Winter (December-March)

If you are dreaming of an intimate, snowy celebration, a winter elopement in New York is pure magic. Think winter wonderland forests, snow-capped mountaintops, and cozy cuddles by the fire at the end of the day.

Special considerations:

  • Incredible opportunities for cozy, fireside celebrations
  • Choose layers that will keep you warm and photograph beautifully
  • Consider indoor backup options for extreme weather
  • Shorter daylight hours mean earlier ceremony times

Step 3: Hire Your New York Elopement Photographer and Book Your Vendor Team

The beautiful thing about eloping in New York (or anywhere else for that matter) is that you get to decide what you want your experience to look like, and that applies to your vendors. While you do not have to hire vendors for your elopement, choosing a few professionals to help you bring your vision to life can make your experience so much more meaningful. Some key vendors to consider are:

New York Elopement Photographer:

When you’re planning a New York elopement with outdoor elements, it’s important to work with someone who understands both the locations and outdoor logistics. Look for a photographer who has hiking experience and understands and follows Leave No Trace principles to ensure your celebration honors the beautiful natural spaces you’re using.

Officiant:

In order to make your New York elopement official, you will need an officiant for your ceremony. Your officiant can be a professional that you hire, or you can have a loved one get ordained and perform your ceremony for you. Or, if you want to keep your elopement simple, I have my officiant license and am able to act as both photographer and officiant if you’d like.

Other Vendors:

Depending on your vision, you might want to add elements like a private chef for an intimate dinner, a florist for locally-sourced bouquets, or a musician for ceremony music (read this post to see how Elena and Max included a mix of vendors and DIY details for their elopement in the Berkshires).

Step 4: Plan Your Travel and Lodging

Whether you’re traveling from out of state or just getting away for an upstate New York elopement, there is an incredible variety of accommodations to choose from that can help make your experience more unique and personalized. Some ideas to consider:

  • Cozy Airbnbs tucked into mountain settings
  • Charming bed & breakfasts in small towns
  • Luxury resorts, if you want to splurge on your celebration
  • Camping options for couples who want a full outdoor adventure

One of the things I like to tell my couples is that this is your wedding day, so have fun with it. Book accommodations that feel fun or exciting, even if it’s not something you would typically do. Your lodging can be such a way to further enjoy your experience. Plus, they can also double as your getting-ready space, your first-look location, or even your ceremony spot.

If you plan to host guests or hold a reception celebration at your accommodation, just be sure to check with your host ahead of time to ensure that what you are envisioning is allowed.

Step 5: Design Your Ceremony and Timeline

Can I let you in on a little secret? Your New York elopement can look however you want it to. Maybe you start with a sunrise hike to your ceremony spot, exchange vows with incredible views, then celebrate with a picnic lunch. Or perhaps you prefer an afternoon ceremony followed by a cozy dinner by a fireplace. No matter what you envision, know that it is possible – and you don’t have to plan it alone. As your elopement photographer, this is one of the things I love helping my couples with. Together, we’ll take your vision and create a detailed timeline so you know what to expect and can simply relax when your elopement day arrives.

Step 6: Secure Any Necessary Permits

Whether or not you need a permit for your elopement in New York will depend on the location you choose. In general, though, here’s what you need to know about permits for eloping in New York:

  • New York State Parks: You’ll likely need a wedding permit if you’re getting married in a state park
  • Guest count matters: Permit requirements can depend on whether your elopement includes guests
  • Location-specific rules: Once you know where you want to celebrate, check the specific permit requirements for that area
  • Plan ahead: Some permits require advance booking, especially during peak seasons. Give yourself at least 4 weeks to obtain the permit before your wedding day.

As your New York elopement photographer, I’ll help you research what permits are needed (if any) and walk you through the process of how to obtain one when the time comes.

Step 7: Get Your New York Marriage License

Getting your marriage license in New York is refreshingly straightforward. Here’s what you need to know about the process, but if you want to learn more, you can always visit the New York City Clerk’s website for the most up to date information.
